Watford are reportedly closing in on the signing of highly-rated Montpellier winger Othmane Maamma, with the 19-year-old having flown to England to hold talks with the Championship club.

According to a report from the Watford Observer, discussions are progressing well between the two parties, with Watford hopeful of securing the Moroccan youth international on a permanent deal ahead of the new season.

Maamma made 12 appearances in Ligue 1 during the 2024/25 campaign, showing glimpses of his attacking talent in a Montpellier side that battled to retain their top-flight status. Despite his limited senior experience, the winger is considered one of the brightest prospects in Moroccan football and has already represented his country at youth level.

Deal Value and Competition

While an official fee has not been disclosed, sources suggest the deal is expected to be worth around £5 million, reflecting the potential the Hornets believe Maamma possesses. Watford are said to have beaten off interest from several European clubs to bring the player to Vicarage Road.

The move would mark another significant investment from Watford as they look to build a promotion-challenging squad under new manager Tom Cleverley.

A Smart Fit?

Maamma is known for his pace, ability to beat defenders 1v1, and versatility across the front line. With Watford looking to inject youth and dynamism into their squad, the Moroccan talent could be a smart long-term addition with significant resale value should he develop as expected.

We’ll continue to follow the deal as it progresses.
