Stoke City are closing in on the signing of experienced left-back Aaron Cresswell, beating competition from Wrexham and Norwich City, according to multiple reports.
The 35-year-old is a free agent following his departure from West Ham United this summer after 11 seasons in East London, where he made over 300 Premier League appearances. Cresswell is expected to sign a one-year deal at the Bet365 Stadium, with the option of a further 12 months.
Stoke have acted swiftly after Wrexham reportedly “dithered” over offering the defender a contract, allowing the Potters to swoop in and agree terms. Norwich City were also said to be monitoring the situation.
Cresswell is viewed as a direct replacement for Enda Stevens, who departed Stoke at the end of last season. With over 600 senior appearances to his name, including spells with Tranmere, Ipswich, and West Ham, Cresswell brings Premier League pedigree and valuable leadership to Mark Robins’ squad.
Capable of playing both left-back and as part of a back three, the veteran defender could also serve as a mentor for Stoke’s younger players as they look to mount a stronger challenge in the Championship this season.
