Preston North End are considering a late-window move for Gent striker Andri Gudjohnsen, with the Iceland international reportedly available for around £2.5 million.
Paul Heckingbottom’s side began their 2025/26 Championship campaign with a hard-fought 1–1 draw at QPR. Milutin Osmajic’s clever chip cancelled out Ben Whiteman’s unfortunate own goal. That result left the Lilywhites pleased with a point, but their attacking depth is already under pressure after Daniel Jebbison picked up an injury.
Will Keane is also sidelined. That leaves Osmajic and Michael Smith as the only recognised strikers. Heckingbottom started with two forwards at Loftus Road, which meant he had no striker on the bench.
PNE turn to Gudjohnsen after Kone bid
The club have already made moves to strengthen their attack. They were recently linked with a £3 million bid for Wycombe Wanderers striker Richard Kone. Now, journalist Alan Nixon reports that PNE are exploring a deal for Gudjohnsen. The player is keen to move to England after limited game time in Belgium.
Gudjohnsen, 23, is the son of Eidur Gudjohnsen, the former Chelsea and Barcelona striker. He made his name in Denmark with Lyngby, scoring 15 goals in the 2022/23 season. That form earned him a move to Gent.
Last season, he scored five times in 32 league appearances for the Belgian Pro League side. He also has 34 caps and nine goals for Iceland, and has attracted interest from clubs in Turkey.
Budget-conscious move
Preston are working within a tight budget, so a £2.5m deal would be a significant outlay. But attacking reinforcements are now essential. The team drew 20 times last season — more than any other Championship side — and struggled to turn matches into wins due to a lack of goals.
If they complete the deal, Gudjohnsen would be their 11th signing of the summer. Recent arrivals include Odel Offiah, Thierry Small and Alfie Devine.
PNE’s next match is away to League Two side Barrow in the EFL Cup on 12 August. Heckingbottom will hope a deal can be completed quickly to give the forward time to settle before the next league game.
