Portsmouth have turned down a £2 million offer from Championship rivals Preston North End for attacking midfielder Callum Lang.

Lang, 26, was one of Pompey’s standout performers during the 2024/25 season, registering 10 goals and 2 assists in 33 appearances across all competitions. His contributions were vital as John Mousinho’s side secured a 16th-place finish in their first Championship campaign since 2012.

Signed from Wigan Athletic in January 2024, Lang quickly became an influential figure at Fratton Park. The versatile forward – capable of playing as a number 10, winger or striker – is contracted until summer 2026, with an option for a further year.

Key FotMob Stats – 2024/25 Championship:

  • 32 league appearances10 goals2 assists
  • 2,444 minutes played28 starts
  • Average match rating: 6.81
  • Percentile rank among Championship attackers:
    • 88th for goals scored
    • 79th for shot attempts
    • 76th for aerial duels won

With Preston narrowly avoiding relegation last season (finishing 20th), manager Paul Heckingbottom is keen to bolster his attacking options following the departure of Emil Riis. Although the club has added Daniel Jebbison and Thierry Small to its ranks, both remain relatively unproven at Championship level.

Lang’s proven output and versatility make him an attractive target, but Portsmouth are standing firm. Unless a significantly higher bid is tabled, the south coast club appear determined to retain one of their key performers.

John Swift’s recent arrival from West Bromwich Albion could offer insurance in midfield, yet Pompey fans will be hopeful that Lang remains central to the club’s ambitions for 2025/26.
