Wrexham are set to complete the signing of midfielder George Thomason from Bolton Wanderers in a deal worth around £1.2 million, with the player undergoing a medical ahead of the move.
The 24-year-old becomes the Red Dragons’ latest high-profile acquisition following the club-record arrival of Liberato Cacace from Empoli. Thomason had also attracted interest from Huddersfield Town, but Wrexham’s higher bid has seen them move swiftly to secure a deal.
Bolton boss Steven Schumacher confirmed after their pre-season win over Hibernian that an offer had been accepted and Thomason was not included in the squad due to the ongoing transfer process. While Schumacher stopped short of naming the club, it is understood that Wrexham are finalising terms.
“We have accepted a bid from a club last week, and he’s gone this weekend to do his medical there,” Schumacher told The Bolton News. “That’s why George wasn’t here.”
Thomason captained Bolton last season and made 169 appearances for the club in total, scoring 13 goals. A key figure in their League One campaign, he registered 4 goals and 3 assists in 38 appearances last season, bringing energy, discipline, and leadership to the midfield.
Having joined Bolton from non-league Longridge Town in 2020, Thomason’s rise through the divisions has been impressive. He now steps into the Championship with newly-promoted Wrexham and adds much-needed depth to Phil Parkinson’s midfield, particularly with Ollie Rathbone recovering from injury.
At 6ft tall and known for his composure and work rate, Thomason is expected to compete for a starting role as Wrexham prepare for their season opener against Southampton on August 9.
