Wrexham AFC are thrilled to confirm the signing of attacking midfielder Josh Windass on a free transfer, following his departure from Sheffield Wednesday. The 31-year-old joins the Red Dragons on a three-year contract until the end of the 2027/28 season, subject to registration and international clearance.
A proven attacking threat with top-level EFL experience, Windass arrives at the STōK Cae Ras having made 153 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday, netting 53 goals across all competitions. He was instrumental in the Owls’ 2022/23 promotion-winning campaign, scoring the decisive goal in the League One play-off final and earning a place in the EFL League One Team of the Season.
“I’ve bought into the manager’s plan” – Windass
Speaking after signing, Windass said:
“I’m looking forward to getting going. I’ve spoken to the manager, who’s shown me his plans for the season and what he expects from the group – I’ve really bought into that.
I’d describe myself as honest and hard-working. I like to contribute goals and assists from midfield and that’s what I’m looking to bring to Wrexham.”
“First and foremost, I want to get into the team and earn the respect of my teammates. I want to be professional, someone to look up to, and help get the team as high up the league as possible.”
A Career of Big Moments
Windass began his senior career at Harrogate Railway Athletic before earning a professional contract with Accrington Stanley in 2013. His breakthrough came in the 2015/16 season with 16 goals, earning a move to Rangers, where he finished as joint-top scorer in 2017/18.
Spells with Wigan Athletic and Sheffield Wednesday followed, with the latter marking his longest stint at a single club. His five-year spell at Hillsborough included memorable goals, including the winner at Wembley in the 2023 play-off final.
Manager’s View
Manager Phil Parkinson said:
“I’m delighted to welcome Josh to the Club. He’s a player with a lot of Championship experience and I’m looking forward to working with him over the coming seasons.”
