Wrexham AFC have reached an agreement to sign Empoli left-back Liberato Cacace in a deal worth £2.2 million plus bonuses, making him the club’s new record signing.

The New Zealand international, who featured 33 times in Serie A last season and scored twice, will join the newly-promoted Championship side ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Cacace, 24, had interest from several Italian clubs, but Wrexham have won the race for his signature. Italian outlets Pianeta Empoli and Calcio Empoli both reported the deal was imminent earlier this week, and the news has now been confirmed by respected journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

The move reunites Cacace with football in the English-speaking world — he began his career at Wellington Phoenix, making 60 appearances before moving to Europe in 2020. He then featured 76 times in Serie A for Empoli, establishing himself as a regular and earning 33 caps for New Zealand.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson is expected to unveil Cacace during the club’s upcoming clash against Wellington Phoenix — a poetic twist as the player returns to face his hometown club.

The signing marks a significant step in Wrexham’s summer rebuild, adding experience and quality as they prepare for life in the Championship.
