Salford City have confirmed the return of goalkeeper Matty Young from Sunderland on a season-long loan for the 2025/26 campaign.
The 18-year-old impressed in his first spell at the Peninsula Stadium last season, making 27 appearances and keeping 8 clean sheets, including a standout run of six consecutive league shutouts over the festive period.
A product of Sunderland’s academy, Young has represented England at youth level and signed his first professional deal with the Black Cats in November 2023. He also featured in the club’s senior pre-season squad this summer, appearing against Sporting CP in Portugal.
Speaking on his return, Young said:
“I’ve set very high expectations for myself – I want to be the best keeper in the league this year. I know what I’m capable of and I’m ready to deliver every week.”
Salford, who narrowly missed out on the play-offs last season, are aiming for automatic promotion, with Young once again expected to play a key role.
Sunderland Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman added:
“Salford is an environment we trust, and this move gives Matty the platform to focus on his performance while remaining closely connected to our senior setup.”
