Salford City are lining up a move for Portsmouth goalkeeper Jordan Archer as they look to bolster their squad ahead of the new League Two season.
The Ammies are in urgent need of senior goalkeeping options following the departures of Jamie Jones and loanee Matt Young earlier this summer. According to The News (Portsmouth), Karl Robinson’s side are now hoping to convince the experienced Archer to drop two divisions in search of regular first-team football.
The 32-year-old, currently third-choice at Fratton Park behind Ben Killip and Nicolas Schmid, made just three appearances for Pompey last season. Killip’s emergence as the club’s first-choice keeper has further reduced Archer’s chances of game time, prompting speculation over his future with 12 months remaining on his contract.
Archer joined Portsmouth from QPR in 2024 and has amassed over 250 senior appearances across a career that has included spells with Millwall, Oxford United, Fulham, Middlesbrough, Wycombe, and Charlton. He played 166 games for Millwall, but hasn’t made more than 20 league appearances in a season since 2019.
Salford, who have been using trialists in pre-season friendlies, see Archer as an experienced and dependable option to step in as their new number one. Talks are expected to develop over the coming days.
