Tranmere Rovers have completed the signing of experienced midfielder Richie Smallwood on a one-year contract.
The 34-year-old, who is approaching 500 career league appearances, brings a wealth of experience and leadership to Andy Crosby’s squad. Smallwood arrives at Prenton Park following a standout season with Bradford City, where he was named both Player of the Season and earned a place in the 2024/25 EFL League Two Team of the Season.
Having previously helped Rotherham United, Hull City, and Bradford win promotion from League One and League Two, Smallwood adds a proven track record of success and captaincy credentials to Tranmere’s midfield unit. Over the past three seasons, he has played the third-highest number of minutes of any central midfielder in the EFL.
🗣️ “When Andy showed me his vision, I knew this was the right place,” said Smallwood. “Tranmere has a brilliant fanbase, and I’m looking forward to being part of a group that wants to achieve something.”
Manager Andy Crosby added: “Richie is a real leader — he gives us control, tactical discipline, and raises the standards on and off the pitch. He knows what it takes to get promoted and will be a big influence in the dressing room.”
Smallwood becomes Tranmere’s seventh summer signing as the club builds a squad capable of pushing for promotion in 2025/26.
