Newcastle United have reached an agreement with Southampton to sign goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale on a season-long loan with an option to buy.
The 26-year-old will return to the Premier League following Southampton’s relegation in May, with a loan fee of approximately £4 million understood to be part of the deal. Ramsdale has been granted permission to undergo a medical ahead of his move to St James’ Park.
This move would reunite the England international with Eddie Howe, who handed him his first regular senior run during their time together at Bournemouth in 2019/20.
Ramsdale on the move again
Ramsdale only joined Southampton from Arsenal last summer but was unable to prevent the Saints from finishing in the bottom three. He started 30 Premier League games last season, conceding over 60 goals behind an often-rotating defensive line.
Despite Southampton’s struggles, Ramsdale remained a vocal and experienced presence, and Newcastle see him as ideal competition for current No.1 Nick Pope, particularly with European football on the horizon.
The Magpies missed out on Burnley’s James Trafford earlier this summer and have turned their attention to Ramsdale as a reliable and Premier League-proven alternative.
Southampton, now under the permanent management of Will Still, are expected to make further changes to their squad. Ramsdale’s departure will likely trigger a search for another senior goalkeeper before the window closes.

A proven Premier League presence
Ramsdale’s career has seen him rise rapidly through the EFL and Premier League. After early loan spells at Chesterfieldand AFC Wimbledon, he earned a move to Sheffield United, then starred at Arsenal — where he played a major role in their 2022/23 title challenge before being displaced by David Raya.
The stopper joined Southampton in 2024 looking to recapture regular football but found himself under siege in a leaky defence. Nevertheless, his leadership and athleticism remain key traits, and Newcastle view this as a low-risk move with potential upside if he rediscovers his best form under Howe.
Ramsdale’s move adds further Premier League experience to a Newcastle side preparing for a return to European competition and a renewed push for a top-four finish.
