Portsmouth have completed the signing of John Swift on a free transfer, following his departure from West Bromwich Albion.
The 30-year-old midfielder has signed a two-year deal at Fratton Park, with an option for a further 12 months. He becomes Pompey’s second signing of the summer, following the arrival of Adrian Segecic.
Swift brings a wealth of experience to John Mousinho’s side, having made 126 appearances and registered 31 goal contributions across three seasons at The Hawthorns. His decision to return to the south coast is understood to have been influenced by strong family ties to the Portsmouth area – where he was born and spent time in the Blues’ youth ranks before joining Chelsea.
Despite interest from Championship clubs, Rangers, and teams in Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the MLS, Swift opted for a Fratton Park return, marking a full-circle moment in his career.
A medical took place on Thursday at a private location, and the deal was finalised shortly after.
Head coach John Mousinho had hinted at a new midfield addition earlier in the week from the club’s Slovakian training camp, stating the centre of the park was a “priority position” following the departures of Isaac and Freddie.
Swift is expected to make his first appearance in a Pompey shirt on Tuesday night, when the Blues take on Woking in their opening pre-season friendly.
