Cheltenham Town have completed the signing of vastly experienced centre-back James Wilson on a one-year contract, as the 36-year-old returns to the club 12 years after his initial loan spell in 2013/14.
Wilson, who hails from Newport, began his career at Bristol City and made his senior debut in the Championship. He went on to feature for several EFL clubs including Oldham Athletic, Sheffield United, Ipswich Town, and Plymouth Argyle — winning the League One title with the latter in 2022/23.
During his brief loan with the Robins in 2013/14, Wilson impressed with his leadership and positional awareness, and shortly after earned his only senior cap for Wales in a 1-1 draw against Belgium.
He most recently played for Bristol Rovers, where he started all 46 of their League One matches last season — underlining his consistency and fitness deep into his career.
Wilson has now linked up with his new teammates and is expected to be in contention for Cheltenham’s Sky Bet League Two opener against Cambridge United this weekend.
