Bolton Wanderers have bolstered their attacking ranks with the season-long loan signing of Mason Burstow from Hull City.

The 21-year-old striker becomes Wanderers’ tenth summer arrival and brings additional firepower to Steven Schumacher’s forward options ahead of Sunday’s League One opener away at Stockport County.

Burstow already has history at Edgeley Park—having scored a powerful headed winner for Hull in a pre-season friendly against Stockport just last weekend. Now, the London-born frontman returns with hopes of a repeat performance in competitive action.

“Another one on Sunday would be a perfect start,” Burstow said. “I’ve obviously played against them this Saturday, so I have a bit of familiarity with how they’re going to set up. Hopefully I can get off to a good start like I did at the weekend.”

Burstow arrives at the Toughsheet Community Stadium following a 12-month stint with Hull City, who signed him from Chelsea last August. He made 31 Championship appearances for the Tigers in 2024/25—mostly from the bench and often out wide—but now looks set to lead the line in a more central role for Wanderers.

The 6’2” striker brings a mix of pace, physicality, and aerial presence, which Bolton see as vital to their promotion push. With Sam Dalby sidelined through injury, Burstow is expected to shoulder much of the early-season responsibility up front and will wear squad number 48.

Head coach Steven Schumacher expressed his delight at the addition:

“We’ve made no secret of the fact that we wanted to add another striker and Mason fits the bill for the type of player we wanted. He’s still a young player but one with a good taste of first-team experience at a high level. I’m excited about what he can do for us this season.”

Burstow began his senior career at Charlton Athletic, scoring on his debut in August 2021 and netting six goals in 18 League One appearances before earning a high-profile move to Chelsea in January 2022. After returning to The Valley on loan, he spent a full campaign with Chelsea’s U21s and made two Premier League appearances off the bench in 2023, as well as a League Cup start.

A loan to Sunderland followed in 2023/24, where he made 18 appearances, scoring once in the Championship. He then joined Hull permanently in 2024, signing a four-year deal, but is now seeking regular minutes under Schumacher in League One.

Burstow’s arrival adds further depth and ambition to a Wanderers side eager to challenge for promotion this season.
