AFC Wimbledon have completed the signing of former Sheffield United striker Antwoine Hackford on a free transfer, with the 21-year-old penning a two-year contract that includes the option of a further year.

Hackford joins following a successful loan spell at Port Vale, where he played a key role in their promotion to League One last season. The Dons have secured one of League Two’s most promising young forwards, with manager Johnnie Jackson praising his pace, power, and direct threat.

The move ends Hackford’s 10-year spell with Sheffield United, the club where he rose through the ranks and made his Premier League debut at just 16 years and 288 days, becoming the Blades’ youngest-ever top-flight player.

A highly rated talent with senior pedigree

Named in The Guardian’s ‘Next Generation 2020’ list, Hackford has long been viewed as a standout prospect. After earlier loans at Burton Albion, it was his impact at Port Vale last season that truly showcased his senior potential.

He made 34 appearances in League Two, scoring six goals and adding four assists — often used both as a starter and an impact option off the bench. His ability to stretch defences and play off the shoulder makes him a strong fit for Wimbledon’s attacking style.

A key piece of the rebuild

Speaking to club media, Hackford said:

“I’ve been at Sheffield United for 10 years, so now is the right time to change and I’m excited to get going here. I’m quick, I can pose a real threat, and I’ll score goals.”

Director of Football Craig Cope added:

“Antwoine has a really exciting profile and a lot of potential. He directly impacted Port Vale’s promotion and we feel our structure will suit his game.”

With promotion ambitions of their own, AFC Wimbledon will hope Hackford can step up again — this time as a key figure in a squad pushing at the top of League Two.
