Salford City have bolstered their midfield by signing Matt Butcher on a two-year deal, making him the second summer acquisition following defender Michael Rose.
A 28-year-old central midfielder, Butcher kicked off his career at Bournemouth, earning the Young Player of the Yearaward in 2014. He then moved to Accrington Stanley, tallying 76 league appearances and 6 goals across two seasons in League One. His consistency earned him a move to Plymouth Argyle, where he featured prominently in their 2022–23 League One title-winning season, making 40 league appearances and scoring 3 goals. More recently, he played for Wycombe Wanderers, adding 13 league appearances in the 2024–25 season before signing with Salford.
On joining Salford, Butcher said:
“I’m a midfielder comfortable across various roles. I play with energy, press high, and bring experience from successful teams. I’ve seen that a strong team spirit and work ethic can take a squad to the next level—and that’s something I’ve already seen here at Salford.”
While his most impactful performances came during the title-winning season at Plymouth, where his consistent presence helped stabilize midfield phases and contributed three goals, his recent Wycombe figures indicate he brings experience—as much as on-field action—into this new project.
