Queens Park Rangers look set to bring Koki Saito back to Loftus Road on a permanent basis, with multiple reports confirming the club have matched Derby County’s bid for the 24-year-old winger. Belgian side Lommel SK are prepared to cash in after their relegation from the top flight.
Saito spent the 2024/25 season on loan in West London, making 39 Championship appearances and registering three goals and three assists. While his raw attacking output was modest, his development across the campaign was noticeable. He became a trusted option for Julien Stéphan in wide areas, offering width, direct running and defensive discipline.
Derby County were also pushing hard for his signature and tabled a similar offer, but Saito’s decision to return to Loftus Road highlights the impact his loan spell made both on and off the pitch. It is thought the deal will cost around £5m, with personal terms not expected to be an obstacle.
A player with proven qualities
Saito has already demonstrated his ability at this level. According to FotMob, he played over 2,200 minutes in the Championship last season, producing 28 shots and creating a steady stream of opportunities for teammates. His percentile rankings underline his profile:
- Chances created – 60th percentile
- Successful dribbles per 90 – 95th percentile
- Defensive contributions – 79th percentile
These figures illustrate why Stéphan and QPR’s recruitment team were so keen to bring him back. While he is not yet a prolific scorer, his ability to carry the ball, link play and press from the front makes him a valuable asset in a side seeking promotion.
Derby frustration, QPR momentum
For Derby, the news comes as a blow. John Eustace has been searching for more wide options, but Saito’s previous connection to QPR appears to have been decisive.
For the Hoops, though, it marks a second consecutive window where they have secured one of their priority targets. The permanent addition of Saito, alongside Richard Koné, suggests that the club are intent on building a young, energetic side capable of pushing into the play-off mix this season.
