Ipswich Town have secured the signing of Spanish striker Ivan Azón from Serie B side Como 1907, as reported by Fabrizio Romano. The 22-year-old joins on an initial loan deal worth £1.7m, with a £12.9m obligation to buy triggered in the event of promotion to the Premier League.

The move brings an end to a drawn-out pursuit for Kieran McKenna’s side, who have been targeting Azón throughout the summer transfer window. Ipswich will be hoping the Spain U21 international can provide the firepower needed after key attacking departures.

A challenging summer for Ipswich

Ipswich have endured a testing transfer window following their relegation, with several key storylines dominating the off-field agenda. The Omari Hutchinson saga continues, while Nathan Broadhead is heading for Wrexham and captain Sam Morsy has departed, leaving a leadership gap in midfield.

McKenna’s forward options have also been reduced, with Ali Al-Hamadi expected to leave. Azón’s arrival addresses a key need, but further additions in wide areas could still be on the cards.

Who is Ivan Azón?

Azón first made his name at Real Zaragoza, breaking into the first team in 2020 and quickly becoming a regular starter. His physical style, hold-up play and ability to run in behind defenders saw him earn a move to Como in September 2024. However, he did not make a competitive appearance for the Italian club in the second half of last season.

At Zaragoza, he amassed 150 appearances in all competitions, scoring 27 goals and providing nine assists. His final season in Spain’s Segunda División was his most productive yet.

A statement of intent from Ipswich

The inclusion of a sizeable purchase obligation in Azón’s deal underlines the belief Ipswich have in his ability to perform at Championship level. His record in Spain suggests he can be a reliable scorer, and at 22, he has room to develop further under McKenna’s coaching.

With the Championship season underway, Ipswich will be eager for Azón to hit the ground running and help propel them back into the promotion mix.
